The Quiet Power of Not Reacting

Playing dumb with a toxic person can sometimes be a surprisingly effective way to protect your peace. It doesn’t mean you’re actually clueless or weak. It means you’re choosing not to participate in the game they’re trying to pull you into.

A toxic or manipulative person may thrive on getting you to explain yourself, defend yourself, argue, reveal what you know, or react emotionally. When you stop giving them that access, you remove a lot of their leverage.

For example, instead of saying, “I know exactly what you’re doing.” you might simply say, “Oh, okay,” “I’m not sure,” “I hadn’t thought about it,” or “Hmm, maybe.” Then you move on.

It can protect your peace because you:

• Give them less information to use against you.

• Avoid pointless arguments. You don't have to prove that you see through them.

• Stop feeding their need for a reaction. Some people deliberately provoke anger, guilt, jealousy, or defensiveness because your reaction gives them an opening.

• Keep your plans private. If you're distancing yourself, setting boundaries, or preparing to leave a situation, they don't necessarily need to know everything you're thinking.

• Let them underestimate your awareness. You can observe what's happening without announcing everything you've noticed.

• Conserve your emotional energy. Every accusation doesn't require a rebuttal, and every lie doesn't require you to expose it.

The important distinction is that playing dumb isn't the same as allowing yourself to be mistreated. It's a strategy of disengagement, not submission.

Sometimes the most peaceful response is essentially:

“I see exactly what you're doing. I just don't need you to know that I see it.”

That can be incredibly freeing, because once you stop needing a toxic person to admit what they're doing, understand your perspective, or acknowledge that you're right, they have far less control over your emotional state.
